Dec 31 - Never Missed Those Year End at Work

For many years I always have to be working on year end, December 31st, unless that day fell on a weekend. I never missed those year-end, quarterly or monthly accounting close. For some reason, I just remembered those olden days where I worked on Christmas Eve or day after Christmas while the boss is out.

It's another New Year's Eve, my favorite song of Barry Mannilow. I always get teary when this song is always played right after twelve midnight struck to welcome the new year. The greatest thing is looking forward to the new year of what's in store for us.

I wish this new year would be healthier even though I am starting this January with a surgery on my tooth :(. It's all ok, as long as it is not something major, heck I can deal with it. I have been on many storms on my life, what else is there that I cannot handle?

For sure, I will start New Year with a bang! Be positive, and everything will be alright. I pray that everything will go on smoothly this year and hoping for a much better year for my loved ones, my dear family. Good-bye 2008.

Dec 30 - Getting Headstart

Everyday I have been cleaning, just getting a head start before New Year. So I see the fogginess on our windows inside. I tackled the task of cleaning the inside windows all upstairs bedrooms and all the windows downstairs immediately. The garage is neatly organized, thanks to the husband. The garbage is full.

I am done with the ham, just have to broil it tomorrow and it's all ready.
The barbecue is all marinated and will put it on a skewer sticks tomorrow. The next one on the to do list is the vegetable egg rolls. The hardest part is the cutting of the veggies. The egg rolls will be wrapped tomorrow. Last to be done is the fruit salad, that will be the easiest to do.

I just invited my brother and their family, not sure if they will show up tomorrow, possibly on New Year's Day. I also invited a friend of mine to our home.
Party horns ready for us to welcome 2009.

Dec 29 - Early Endo Appt.

I spent about an hour to my consultation endo appointment and I needed a surgery which will be in January to correct a post on my root canal, yikes. No big deal. I just needed to get it done, I guess, and go on with life. It actually isn't bothering me at all, but gotta get it fixed.

Why do I feel so tired all day long? I guess it was from the chores I did yesterday. I also went grocery shopping again today for the New Years Eve cooking that I have to do. Almost done with the things that I needed. Tomorrow I will start with the ham.

Got so lazy to cook for dinner so we just had In-n-Out.

It was alright, last I was there was maybe three months ago. So now I feel like I can hit the bed and go to sleep. I am tired!

Dec 28 - Pain/Swelling FInger

I have been bothered by my right ring finger for a long time now. It is quite difficult to do some chores especially if I bang it everywhere or even just giving these kids a bath. It's been like swollen everyday. I finally had it checked a week or so ago and had an x-ray. The doctor's office called me Friday, all my blood tests were clear and x-ray ok. So, I was ordered to just take Aleve for seven days, we shall see if it improves. Maybe it's arthritis.

So I took Aleve (NSAID - Non Steroidal Inflammatory Drug)last night, it is stll the same. The real steroids are possibly good to help the inflammation, however, the side effects are quite bad such as weight gain, stomach aches etc.

Woke up late and started to feed DS breakfast. Then I cooked beefsteak for lunch. Then I started to clean up on my bedroom, threw a lot of trash. Cleaned all the bathrooms. Clear the side tables and rearrange all the picture frames. My finger is not appreciating the work. I need a helper because I am afraid soon I won't be able to write. Geeze, I am not that old! However, I was told some infants and kids gets arthritis.

Living room is already clean. I cleaned the toaster oven, microwave and some areas in the kitchen and the computer area and the breakfast nook. Not done yet. I was just upstairs and vacuumed the room. I also have loads of clothes in the laundry and will be done soon. Two basketful of laundry plus the sheets that I have to change later. I will have to do the comforters tomorrow at a Laundromat.

So DH is helping clear out the trash at home, clean the rug area. I am getting rid of stuff that we no longer use. It really gets too dusty after one day, I have to keep up with the mess. These kids make a lot of mess and I get tired too easily.

Such is life.

Dec 27 - No Mall Shopping Today

We did not visit the mall today nor yesterday even though after Christmas sales were slashed with 70% off. I usually would buy Christmas wrapping, decorations, etc however, I put it off this year. Sometimes I ended up buying but I leave it in the garage and I forget it for a long time until I look into the garage storage and find them again some two years after. Not wise.

I did some shopping today, the usual stuff from a warehouse grocery like milk, steak, chicken, water and just few items, the the needed ones. We ate there too as DD3 calls it "the backyard pizza". We had hot dogs, pizza and churro (yeah, at Costco). Then off to the vet to pick up our pups medication.

The next stop was at the "stinky market", oriental store of course. I bought stuff for pancit which I will be cooking for New Year's Eve. I will be making a ham, possibly a stuffed bangus, vegetable egg roll and fruit salad.

New Year, in just four more days.......

Dec 25 - A Rainy Day

Yuck.... This morning started out gloomy and rain pouring. I kind of expected that as the weather forecast showed showers everywhere. Hmmm, must be nice to just stay in bed but the kids were in a hurry to open their presents from Santa. Yes, Santa came last night!

So the rule is to eat breakfast first and of course the two little ones hurried and finished their breakfast so they can start checking their stockings. They got excited because they got what they wanted from Santa. The children did not ask for expensive stuff, so it was manageable. They got their blankets, My Meebas, Pixos and Legos. That's pretty much it, nothing extravagant. The pup was even excited and he got some presents, too (of course teething toys).

We hurriedly got ourselves ready for lunch. We went back to the same party from last night, met my parents and stayed there till 9:30 pm. I ate a lot so that's not great at all. It's about 42 degrees outside and I was freezing getting in the car. I can't stress enough, I do not like this kind of weather.

As soon as we're home, the kids started to actually play with the gifts they received. They also have a couple of DVDs from DD1 & DD2. This would keep them busy for awhile. They worked on Pixos. Now they are playing with domino. They are playing together and we shall see how long this sharing will last. Oops I hear someone getting angry already. I have to go.

Dec 24 - Christmas Celebration

Many countries already started celebrating Christmas. I wish my family, relatives and friends a Blessed Christmas! I hope this Christmas brings Peace, Joy, Love, Happiness and Good Health to you and your loved ones.

I offer my gift of prayers to those that I am unable to reach. Prayers for the homeless, people who are starving, elders and kids who are sick, the unemployed, and most especially those who are alone in this world who are unable to celebrate Christmas with a family.

I have been very thankful for all the blessings even though this year was rough for the family. Each day is a blessing of hope and if there's hope there is life. I pray for Good Health as my top wish for my family and friends.

Dec 23 - More Errands

I have my last shipment of candles last night so today is a busy day delivering those last minute orders. I have one more left to deliver which I could possibly squeeze on my schedule tomorrow.

So I have to bring the pup to the vet to make sure he gets all shots needed. He has one more follow up shots next month. We went back to the pet store to change his shampoo, found out maltipoos have sensitive skin, so we had to get a hypoallergenic shampoo (more expensive than my shampoo, courtesy of DD2). Then we had to get a crate so we can start him on crate training.

He is adjusted to our home environment that he ate all his food without spoon feeding him. That's a relief! He plays more, chews on stuff. So he will be spending time on his crate tomorrow when we go to church. Haha, he also started to bark. A couple of days he was a bit nervous but now he knows he's home sweet home.

What a spoiled little brat. I have to smashed his food so I have to prepare it at least one hour before he eats. He follows the little kids around and he got caught yanking on a paper from the floor. Now I have to make sure the whole surrounding is puppy proof.

DS is enjoying playing with him. This will be good when DD3 is at school and he has the pup to play with.

Dec 22 - The Day is Much Better

Not. With all the rain today and the errands to do outside, I did not enjoy it. First off, the bank was full packed, I wonder why? I am still waiting for the rent checks that I have to take care of, what happened to the snail mail?

I have to deal with the arguments with the puppy today. DD2 fighting with DD3 and DS because someone is hogging it. DD3 helps in taking care of the pup, however, she acts like a five year old dealing with DD3 and DS. Let alone, DD1 also wants to have the pup. Gosh, all of them needs to learn what SHARING means.

DS was happily awaken with the puppy wagging his tail. The pup wants to play with DS, run around the kitchen and living room. I am afraid that this pup might get squeezed when DS picks him up. I had to teach DS to be a little gentle as it may break him apart.

We had to get the special brush for his hair (just like Butchie's, our previous toy poodle) and shampoo. I am still looking for a crate, maybe I can get my old crate back from my brother, if they are no longer using it. So much to do. I might ask for the gate as well.

Glad the rain stopped before it went dark outside because we planned on visiting some homes with famous Christmas decorations around here. We went to about five homes, some ten miles away. Tomorrow we will visit possibly five homes again, near our area. I have heard they take at least two to three months in setting their homes with these lights and decorations. Oh how I wish I can do that! You need some electrical engineers to get all those wiring and connections. Some have won more than ten years in Best Christmas Decoration in the city. They proudly affix their plaques/signs of recognition on their front yards. Some garages were also beautifully decorated with ceramic villages, trains running around in circles on the ground. Even the roof top were full of lights, icicles on the gutters, Christmas music playing round the clock. Snowman, Santa, Mickey and Minnie, Spongebob, Pooh were the common theme with those blown up plastic decorations powered by air compressors. (For the locals, google Christmas Lights Display in Santa Clara)

The last stop was supposedly to the Christmas in the Park. It seems like it got spoiled due to the homes we just saw. Also, DD3 has a cold and she's coughing so It's best not to go out.

Dec 21 - New Addition to the Family

It's always hard to make adjustments with new addition to the family. Well at least everyone is home right now so we all get to pitch in. I will be busier with this new member of the family.

Adjustment period is rather difficult. Already whining in the car earlier. Then food is kind of distasteful. Then after few hours, he's running all over the place. Getting a little adjusted. Finally DD1 came home with the wee wee pads, I am a little relieved from five times I had to clean up the floor.

I can see the smiles from all the kids faces at home. They are all happy and even the little ones wanted to play. This little cutie is very playful. I just hope I can potty train him soon. We shall see.

The name is still up for a vote. DD3 made up a long list of names. No one can agree with any name yet. DS is fighting for a name and so as DD2. It's a battle right now. We will settle for a name very soon.

He is so gentle and nice. I had to feed him like a baby and he's just been here for a few hours. DS wanted a dinosaur, I cannot afford that plus it would be too much for the family, haha. So we settled for a maltipoo. DD3 was giving him a tour of our home, so cute... "this is our kitchen".... She read a book to him and he seems interested. DD2 was happy being chased by.

Right now, Frosty it is, we shall see if the name will be changed again. (It was Spiky earlier)

Dec 19 - Hectic Productive Day

I thought we will be on the road by 9 a.m., it didn't happen. DD1 was taking her sweet time getting ready. We have a lot of errands and just as we were leaving my cousin called and scheduled to stop by later to bring her present to her godson (DS).

First stop was at DD1 & DD2s elementary school. We talked to the principal about a proposal to donate for a scholarship. DD1 had the details about the scholarship program, eligibility and requirements. It's always good to give back to this community, after all, we were treated as a family in the past. Administration, teachers and other faculty members welcomed DD1 and DD2 each time we pay a school visit. When DD1 and DD2 were in high school, each visit to this school was always a memorable one for them whether it be for a High School Information Night or a speech to the parents about a project for Sacred Heart Community Center. They always welcomed my girls to help out with their annual volleyball tournaments as line judges or referees. So next year, there will be a Farrales Scholarship to be donated to the school for a student who excels in leadership.

Second stop was at DD1 and DD2s high school. They visited their little sisters at the school. Hugs and "hellos" to everyone they know, from Principal, Dean, Counselors, faculty members and students. DD1 and DD2 were popular (not to brag about it). The community welcomed them as well. I can say that even though they both left the school, my kids still love to visit. The gratitude overwhelms me because I know the administration knows me as DD1 and DD2s mom. I was proud of them.

Next stop was DD1s Dr. appointment(rheumatolgist). She's getting better, in remission. I always pray that her disease not be active. She will still be on medications, not safe to take it out yet. Not all the blood levels are normal, in fact Hemoglobin, WBC (white blood cells) and RBC (red blood cells) are not up there yet. Disease is quiet right now which is good. She will be back for another rheumy appointment in March during Spring Break.

Last stop, we had to pick up DD3 from school. I thought we were not going to make it because of the dr. appointment. We got there on time, DD3 did not need to go to the daycare.

We were home by 12:45. Cousin stopped by around 2pm and she was so nice to bring some Chinese food for lunch. I have not had Chinese dish in a long time, that was so good. We had a good chat and wrapped up around 4pm. Then I continued my laundry duties ......

Dec 18 - Cold/Rainy /Snowy or Hot Weather

Any preference? I myself do not like the rain nor this cold weather. I was born in the cold month of January but I guess I like the opposite weather. Why I do not like the rain? The main reason is I get stuck more inside the house. I am a homey person but I always want to be out when the weather is warm. I do not like a muggy weather as well as a foggy gloomy one.

It's quite depressing outside when it's raining. Who would want to be on a depressed state? Also when it is cold outside you are always in a hurry to go back home and stay warm inside. I probably cannot live outside California especially when it is snowing. First you need to layer your clothes, need to shovel and driving condition is usually miserable. I can still tolerate this cold weather in California compared to snowy states.

I do not mind going up to the mountains to ski, this was during my younger days. I can ski alright but it just takes too much time to put the gears on and off. I'd rather stroll the beaches in Hawaii with sunglasses and shorts on (I am dreaming right now).

We need the rain, however, I can't wait for April to come. My favorite months that I enjoy the most are from April to October. Coming soon? Not quite yet.

Dec 17 - Can't Sleep

Last night was not a good one. I was not able to sleep well because DD1 kept waking up. She must have been gone to the bathroom twenty times in thirty minutes. I am a light sleeper so any movements I am easily awaken. Told her not to worry and I believed she has UTI. That was around two a.m. By Four a.m., she went again about three times.

Why do mothers always worry if her child is sick. It is normal. Small child or big child mothers always worry about her own kids, sick or not. It does break my heart to see any of my children getting sick. I cry inside if I cannot do anything about it. If I can only be a doctor the same moment just get the pain away, I'd do it. Us mothers can only do so much, maybe minor soothing to keep the "ouch" temporarily. What about major illness?

DD1 had a surgery when she was two years old. DD2 had a surgery when she was four or five years old. They have been to ER several times due to sport injuries. They have their share of hospital confinement due to illness. It may be a long night for me to watch or care for them but I am a mother who can't sleep. I wanted to make sure that they were always ok.

The happy feeling in the end is when you see these kids back in their normal life. I allow myself to adjust with the lack of sleep. I know I can catch up some other day.

Dec 15 - Free Trips

So last night I won two trips on my dreams, it was supposed to be two European Trips. Had I not awaken myself from DS movements, I could have been on my trip.

It started as I won a raffle. Then there was also like a pick a card or something and I know I've won. I had several dreams before that I was on a vacation. I would wake up so happy in the morning as I was able to go on vacation without spending any penny at all. I would be thankful for going on a vacation break and seeing beautiful places. What a wonderful experience. Last night was totally not cool because I won the trips, however, I was not supposed to go until two weeks.

I also remembered some numbers from my dream last night, too bad I cannot buy a lotto ticket as the numbers were beyond the numbers available. I thought this would be the key to winning something. I really do not spend money on lotto tickets period.

I woke up a few times thinking it was not a dream. I remember going back to sleep right away and there it goes, it continued to the next episode. I was really really overjoyed, imagine two trips to Europe!

Finally, it was about seven a.m. reality checked in. Oh, no free trips, no vacation after all. Unbelievable!

Dec 13 - ESP/Dreams

Do you believe in ESP (extra sensory perception)? I heard if you have ESP they said that you have a third eye. Imagine thinking of someone and all of a sudden that person will be calling you. It isn't something that gives me goosebumps, it's just unusual.

I can site countless of situations but it seems that it occurs to me once in awhile, There have been occasions where I needed to talk to my friend and I thought about calling her and all of a sudden I get distracted and I had to do errands or some chores. The same day, that friend would call me. Sometimes that person whom I thought of would call me a day or two. I don't think it's a mere coincidence but it happens.

I also have a habit of calling my friends when I dream about them. It is a way of reminding me to keep in touch with them or mainly to say "hello". Good or bad dreams, I call my friends when they appear on my dreams. There are times when I dream about them and they call me the same day. How weird is that? I have few friends that are so dear to me, friends from high school and from work. Sometimes just to update with them we try to catch up just when we find the time. I still have friends from my DDs school since they were elementary and high school.

Sometimes I would think about DDs aunt and the same day I would get text messages from her. She knows I have ESP. I have seen a particular situation on my dreams long time ago. When I wake up in the middle of my dream, I go back to sleep and my dream will continue. I remember most of my dreams and I dream everyday. I usually wake up three or four times at night. I can have different dreams even there's a distraction from sleep. Rarely I have scary dreams.

It is time to catch up with some friends so I'd be waiting for their phone calls. I know they will call soon or I may possibly call them myself, too. Sweet Dreams.

Dec 11 - Blogpost by Singapore's Youngest Millionaire

This was a blog by a youngest millionaire. I thought it was worth sharing and I received it via email from my friend. Here it goes:

Subject: A Blog Post by Singapore's Youngest Millionaire

By Adam Khoo
On Money

Some of you may already know that I travel around the region pretty frequently, having to visit and conduct seminars at my offices in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Suzhou (China). I am in the airport almost every other week so I get to bump into many people who have attended my seminars or have read my books.

Recently, someone came up to me on a plane to KL and looked rather shocked. He asked, How come a millionaire like you is travelling economy? My reply was, That's why I am a millionaire. He still looked pretty confused. This again confirms that greatest lie ever told about wealth (which I wrote about in my latest book Secrets of Self-Made Millionaire) . Many people have been brainwashed to think that millionaires have to wear Gucci, Hugo Boss, Rolex, and sit on first class
in air travel. This is why so many people never become rich because the moment that earn more money, they think that it is only natural that they spend more, putting them back to square one.

The truth is that most self-made millionaires are frugal and only spend on what is necessary and of value. That is why they are able to accumulate and multiply their wealth so much faster. Over the last 7 years, I have saved about 80% of my income while today I save only about 60% (because I have my wife, mother in law, 2 maids, 2 kids, etc. to support). Still, it is way above most people who save 10% of their income (if they are lucky). I refuse to buy a first class ticket or to buy a $300 shirt because I think that it is a complete waste of money. However, I happily pay $1,300 to send my 2-year old daughter to Julia Gabriel Speech and Drama without thinking twice.

When I joined the YEO (Young Entrepreneurs Organization) a few years back (YEO is an exclusive club open to those who are under 40 and make over $1m a year in their own business) I discovered that those who were self-made thought like me. Many of them with net worths well over $5m, travelled economy class and some even drove Toyotas and Nissans (not Audis, Mercs, BMWs).

I noticed that it was only those who never had to work hard to build their own wealth (there were also a few ministers and tycoons sons in the club) who spent like there was no tomorrow. Somehow, when you did not have to build everything from scratch, you do not really value money. This is precisely the reason why a familys wealth (no matter how much) rarely lasts past the third generation. Thank God my rich dad (oh no! I sound like Kiyosaki) foresaw this terrible possibility and refused to give me a cent to start my business.

Then some people ask me, What is the point in making so much money if you dont enjoy it? The thing is that I dont really find happiness in buying branded clothes, jewellery or sitting first class. Even if buying something makes me happy it is only for a while, it does not last. Material happiness never lasts, it just give you a quick fix. After a while you feel lousy again and have to buy the next thing which you think will make you happy. I always think that if you need material things to make you happy, then you live a pretty sad and unfulfilled life.

Instead, what make ME happy is when I see my children laughing and playing and learning so fast. What makes me happy is when I see my companies and trainers reaching more and more people every year in so many more countries. What makes me really happy is when I read all the emails about how my books and seminars have touched and inspired someones life. What makes me really happy is reading all your wonderful posts about how this BLOG is inspiring you. This happiness makes me feel really good for a long time, much much more than what a Rolex would do for me.

I think the point I want to put across is that happiness must come from doing your lifes work (be in teaching, building homes, designing, trading, winning tournaments etc.) and the money that comes is only a by-product. If you hate what you are doing and rely on the money you earn to make you happy by buying stuff, then I think that you are living a life of meaninglessness.

Dec 9 - Dear Santa (Potty Training DS)

Few weeks ago, I made DD3 write a letter to Santa to tell him what she wants for Christmas. She wrote to him and told him what she and her brother want for Christmas. Of course I had to let them know that they need to be a good girl and boy so Santa will give them presents. At home, we practice saying "Dear Santa" if both kids are good or not. Here it goes.......

I am blogging about how I was able to potty train DS to do #2. It's rather difficult to train a boy as I recalled how I did it with all DDs. I know I have also to take into account that it is harder to potty train during the cold months than during the summer months. I have been trying for months to train DS. If he is missing in action around me, I know he is somewhere in the corner doing it. DS is clingy, so I know if he is not around there's something going on.

I used the "Dear Santa" approach. "Dear Santa, DS is a good boy, he will not do #2 anymore on his diaper. Please come and visit this Christmas and bring him toys. Love, Mommy". Just one day, he was able to do it. He will tell me if he needs to go to the bathroom. The funny thing is that everytime he does #2, he would say "Dear Santa, I am a good boy. Love, *******."

At this time DS isn't done with Potty Training #1. We're making progress. He started out going sitting down for awhile. Then I used the step stool so he can stand (this one was a mess, rather frustrating for me). We also used cheerios/fruit loops in the bowl to aim while standing on the step stool, not quite working. The latest try was to tiptoe and lean his knees on the bowl while standing and his hands on the toilet seat. This one works, not too messy. He learned to wash his hands with soap after flushing and putting down the most important thing, the toilet seat. I also clean up whatever mess and continue to supervise him. I know we're getting there, just a little more patience.

Now that we have the "Dear Santa" approach working, I use that when both kids are not getting along. I also do that if someone is not sharing or not listening to me. I just wonder how long this approach will last, maybe after Christmas? I hope not!

Dec 8 - Oh You Better Watch Out

Couple of days ago, DS picked up some music from the car and when we were in bed, he started singing just a few lines of the Christmas song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". I was a bit curious how fast he can learn this song so I decided to sing it slowly. We went over it just a few times and he was able to master the first verse. I figured that it would not be as hard after all because it's repetitive!

After two days of singing, the third day he started singing the verse "He's making a list and checking it twice" already by himself. Hmmm.... interesting. So last night, I was reviewing the "He's knows when you're sleeping" , wow.. he picked it up. I was trying to record just the first two verses, still imperfect. After sometime, he got annoyed and did not want to proceed in recording.

We were ready to go to sleep last night he said "How about Santa, Baby?" I was cracking up the whole time then I asked him where he heard that from? He replied to me "In the car!" Oh... that was when we were waiting in the car earlier and I did not know that he was really paying attention with the music because I know he was a little bit sleepy.

Silly. Sometimes they drive me nuts, but all my kids are my angels. I love them. DS always tells me everyday "I love you so much, mommy"

Dec 7 - Teaching the Kids Some Chores-Laundry

I used to do loads and loads of laundry and it became overwhelming. I just wash those pair of pants the other day and here it goes again in the laundry basket! It gets frustrating to see loads of soiled clothes especially when I just did the laundry 2 days ago.

The Trick. So before the eldest daughters went to high school, I started teaching them to do their own laundry. Ehem, I am not the maid in the house and I had a full time job at that time. I showed them how to sort the whites, the lights and the darks. I made them responsible for their own laundry because they use the most clothes. Since then, my frustration about laundry went away. (Not that I do not like this chore, but I'd rather cook)

DD1 and DD2 never sort their clothes until they went off to college. I guess they eventually learned. When they come home from school, they bring their laundry. I am happy that they sort it the way I taught them. I hope they will teach their kids when that time comes.

Now that it's winter months, my laundry is gazillion because we use more clothes. I taught the little boy to help me put the laundry in the washer. He loves to help me put the washed laundry in the dryer. If he can only carry the basket he'd do it for me. Now I am teaching the little ones early, hopefully they will learn faster.

Dec 5 - Mean Mum

About a month ago or so I got an email from my aunt and that email was just forwarded from her office and it's about Mean Mums. After reading the email, I Googled Mean Mums and I found the same article, this one is more detailed. I am a Mean Mum, I must admit, however, I still draw a line on what's reasonable or not. If you want to know ask my kids, the older ones. I love them.

So here is the article about Mean Mums and the link/reference is below:

Someday when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a parent, I will tell them, as my Mean Mum told me:

I loved you enough to ask where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home.
I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep.
I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your room, a job that should have taken 15 minutes.
I loved you enough to let you see anger, disappointment and tears in my eyes. Children must learn that their parents aren't perfect.
I loved you enough to let you assume the responsibility for your actions even when the penalties were so harsh they almost broke my heart.
But most of all, I loved you enough to say NO when I knew you would hate me for it.

Those were the most difficult battles of all. I'm glad I won them, because in the end you won, too. And someday, when your children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates parents, you will tell them. Was your mum mean? I know mine was.

We had the meanest mother in the whole world!
While other kids ate lollies for breakfast , we had to have cereal, eggs and toast.
When others had a soft drink and cake for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches.
And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.

Mum insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less. We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, empty the trash and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do. She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds and had eyes in the back of her head. Then, life was really tough! Mum wouldn't let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing out best to be mean parents just like mum was. I think that is what's wrong with the world today. It just doesn't have enough mean mums!

Dec 4 - The Expected

My garage has been acting up for a good 4 months now. I had a feeling one of these days it will just give up and on the back of my mind, what if it breaks while the car is about to be parked? Husband is not a handy man. The real problem - when we press the button, it closes half way until the problem got worst, we have to press the button ten times (last time I counted) before the door closes.

It did not happen as I thought it would, it just suddenly break when the garage door was opened this morning. The springs broke! I had done a couple of quotes the past 2 weeks and I came prepared of what to expect as to what the damage will be. So the two quotes were way off. Now we have to go to Home Depot To get one more quote. If I save $200 that's great, as long as it serves it's purpose, to use the garage for the cars.

Well, the garage is old, we need to new roll up ones and a silent type. It gets annoying waking up with the garage door rolling because my bedroom is on second floor. So we shall see what's out there. At least, I have a comparable quote.

When things go wrong sometimes the expected becomes unexpected. I was hoping not to fixed it yet for another six months, however, it really gets too cold and leaving the cars outside is not a great idea either. You'll never know what to expect.

Dec 2 - Library Day

My schedule got messed up last week because of Thanksgiving holiday. Library Day is a Wednesday, however, we had to return some dvds today so husband just went off to return all the books too.

I remember those days when DD1 and DD2 went to the library every week. We had to borrow and return books also. They also volunteered at the library. Those were the days. DD1 reads a lot and so as DD2. Now it is DD3's turn to read for that Book It program where you earn a mini pizza each month for reading everyday. DD3 is a second grader level in reading. Trips to the library helps a lot especially in writing expository. This is what DD3 is doing at school. She can write 4 to 5 sentences in expository writing.

We usually spend at least a good hour and a half when we visit the library. I let the little kids pick the books they want to read. DS is excited to go to our library trips. He checks out dinosaur books. I also get to read 3 or 4 books to them and they enjoy it.

I also teach the kids to be responsible with the books that they borrow. Each kid has their own little bag to put the borrowed books. We count the books and dvds after we check out and before we return it. Once they are done reading a book, they must return it in the bag. They also know that they should take care of the books. The time we spend with our children are priceless. They learn from us.

Nowadays, we really need to take part in our kids education. I did it before even when I was working full time. Now that I am a home mom, why not? The trip to the library is something that my kids look forward to. I can see the excitement and they can't wait to go.

So tomorrow we go back to our regular schedule to go to the library. Wednesdays are our Library Days.

DEC 1 - Mother's Instinct

Last night DD1 flew back to Southern California. I just could not stand I was all worried and uneasy when I was praying and I prayed so deeply that she's safe. It's past 10:30 pm and no phone calls. I was unable to reach her. I had to call one of the room mates to get a phone number of another room mate who will be picking her up from the airport.

Before she even flew here, I already told her she should not take very late flights. I guess we all learned from this. The plane did not land to the designated airport due to heavy fog. She was thirty minutes away from where she should be. DD1 immediately called us kept us abreast of the situation. Finally, the airline provided shuttle buses to bring the passengers to SNA (John Wayne Airport). That was around 12 midnight. I've been praying that she's not alone, DD1 told me that her friend was in the same flight. Her friend's room mate drove her to her condo from SNA. She was safe and home by 1:30 a.m. and so tired.

I didn't go to bed until after she called. I started my prayers again thanking God for watching over her. Life must go on.

Nov 30 - When Someone Leaves

It is always sad when someone leaves. A good example is when you go on vacation to visit relatives and friends. It's an emotional roller coaster ride that you are always so happy to see them but sad to leave. I feel the same when my kids come home and then they leave to go back to school. It is a ride where they comfort you when they are home and makes you worry when they are away.

How I cope up with the sadness is by calling or texting them. Thank God for the technology today. I know that the eldest daughters are always happy to leave home because they seek their independence, I understand that. Is this a temporary feeling? I don't know exactly if they feel the sadness of leaving. It's just hard to say our "goodbyes" even if I know I will be talking to them later on. Even if I try to hide my feelings, my eyes get teary.

I feel the comfort and security when I pray to God to watch them for me. I never stop asking for God's help for the safety of my family. I couldn't ask for anything more. I am truly blessed my eldest daughters are my pride and joy (and of course the little ones, too).

So today is a sad day, although I know they will be back home before Christmas. I worry about them too much. I pray to God to give me strength everyday and be with us always for all the challenges that we have to face.

Nov 28 - Black Friday

It was noon already when we decided to go to Walmart to get some disposable wipes. I called my SIL to find out what their plans were... shopping. I mentioned we were on our way to Walmart she suggested to go to Gilroy because it's a Walmart Superstore and indeed it was humongous! Yes, they ended up coming with us and we decided to shop at the outlets. Hmmmm.. this isn't on my plan at all.

Let's see, at Walmart I planned on buying disposable wipes and ended up with full cart! Gosh, it seems like the stuff I bought were items "needed" at home and ended up with a tab of $130. I had to buy diapers because we forgot to refill DS bag for diapers and we were out all afternoon. A toaster oven in my cart because husband wanted one, our old one broke a long time ago and we have not replaced it yet. I also bought the presents of DD1 and DD2 that they need to wrap. Got some gift boxes so I don't need to buy wrapping paper ( I know I have plenty in the garage somewhere). Other items are some grocery stuff that we needed. Yes, Walmart has a grocery section.

I was not too excited to go to the outlets because I have a budget to worry about. I ended up buying stocking stuffer for DD3. I put off buying shoes for me. Husband bought one for him. He also bought a bag for me for Christmas. Darn, there wasn't any matching wallet! We were not going to stop by at this store because you have to fall in line before you even go through the doors. The line outside was too long and it's cold. Haaayyyy....... off we went to the other side of this stretched outlet. DD1 needs a suit, got a good deal. She tried them on last night and it was all perfect. Good job, mom! We will probably go back as I did not realize DD2 needs a pair also. This is something that they will use for interviews, sometimes they are required to be in suits for some special function at school.

DD1 and DD2 went shopping also but at the other outlet store. I gave them the "usual" Christmas present from us so they can go shopping. As they get older, they realize the value of money. I believe they ended up not shopping too much. They will probably hit the stores when they come back for Christmas vacation, that's around 3rd week in December.

I had a good night sleep last night because I was too tired, feet hurt from all the walking when shopping. Today, we will get ready soon. The kids will have their holiday picture taken.

Nov 27 - Thanksgiving Day

My mornings usually start with a prayer. Today, Thanksgiving Day, I thanked God for His love, kindness, all the blessings and most especially for watching over my family. I pray that He guide my kids for every journey they may take and to be with them with every challenge they may face. Thank you God for keeping us healthy always.

Thanksgiving Day is fulfilled with a good feast and celebration of being with the family. It may not be a perfect family gathering but I'd say it's all good. I am blessed with my family and even if it was a simple celebration, it was fun.

Thank you Mom & Dad. Thank you my brother and sister's family. Thank you wonderful nieces & nephews, kids, little babies for having a wonderful time today. Finally thank you my "family" who lives with me, you all made my day. The food I prepared were all made of LOVE for all of you.

A special "Thank You" to You o Lord for keeping us safe & healthy always. I end my Thanksgiving Day with my prayers tonight before I go to bed.

Nov 26 - A Good Gloomy Day

Today is a good day so far. It's hectic but manageable. Woke up at 10 a.m. because the baby was up very late last night. He was scared maybe because of the dinosaur books that we borrowed from the library. It's raining and gloomy, the kind of day that I really do not like. It's all good because we need the rain.

I started preparing for my dishes that I need to bring tomorrow at my brother's house. I have everything that I needed so no other last minute trips to the store. I will be up an about tomorrow and will take my time in making the Pancit Bihon. I finished the ham I just need to broil it tomorrow and that's it for my Thanksgiving food preparation.

For breakfast tomorrow, my husband will be cooking the eggs, bacon and spam. He will be cooking for 6. DD1 will be flying in about 10:40 pm from Southern California. DS was so happy to see DD2 at the door when she rang the bell. I feel happy, oh so happy it will be bonding time again.

I miss the nights when DD1 sleeps on my bed. I always sleep comfortably when she's home, less worry for me. I guess we will see if she will sleep in my room tonight. Of course DS gets jealous.

What's the day in store for me tomorrow? We will find out soon.

DD1 = Dear Daughter 1
DD2 = Dear Daughter 2
DD3 = Dear Daughter 3
DS = Dearest Son

Nov 25 - Volunteer Day

Every Tuesday is a volunteer day for me at school. These first graders were excited to fit on those paper costumes I made for the class last week. Indian or pilgrim, you can see these busy bees coloring their costumes. It was fulfilling to see these happy faces and excited for tomorrows celebration. ooops, they ran out of paper feathers and two little boys ask if I can make a few more. I did and it felt just great that they all appreciated the costumes I made.

I don't ran out of things to do. I only have three hours and it seems that time flies when I work. So I am the designated mom to help for preparation in this class on a weekly basis. Couple of weeks ago I made two paper turkeys, feathers and fall leaves to decorate the bulletin board in the hallway. Each kid wrote on a paper feather about what they are "thankful for". I was given some "expository writing" of these first graders and I posted it all on the board. The bulletin board title: First Graders Give Thanks. Mrs. Z asked if I could do a die cut for the title. I made it on two colored paper so it will look like a 3D. The bulletin board was decent, simply decorated.

Every time I work is a challenge because it gets really busy. There were times when I had to bring home the work to finish it and bring it back the following day. It's fun I must admit. The highlight of this work is that my daughter is always happy when she sees me in the classroom. She comes by on my table to say "I Love You, Mommy".

Big job or small job, filing, stapling, copying or pasting, every minute of it is special. Every little kid in the class knows I am my daughter's "mom".

Nov 24 - Kids Shoes

I remember those days when Disney designed velcro kid's shoes were a fad. My eldest daughters loved those Ariel & Belle. The shoes were made in China and obviously cheaper than branded names. I'd say the quality of the Disney shoes were great.

Typically, I shop the branded name shoes such as Nike, Adidas or New Balance at Marshalls or Ross (brand names for less). The Stride Rite, I shop at the mall and usually on their clearance sale. I like Stride Rite's classic leather Mary Jane shoes and my daughter wears them on formal uniform days at the school.

Do we really need the BRANDED shoes? I invest on my kids shoes because I am protecting their little feet. I want to make sure they are comfortable with what they are wearing and Stride Rite's fulfilling that purpose. Those are good quality shoes that the kids outgrow and still able to pass it along as hand me downs because of its durability.

Today, I intended to go window shopping for the little kids shoes and instead of browsing, I ended up buying a couple of pairs. Good deal? Yes, on a clearance at Stride Rite and sizes were available. Next time to visit this place again is next year when school starts. Mission accomplished!

Nov 22 - Memberships & Subscriptions

Almost a year ago my family spent the Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving)at Children's Discovery Museum. Instead of paying the admission prices, we decided to take advantage of the Family Membership of $75. It was all worth it for us because we went five times already. The kids enjoy this special trip during Spring Break, summer and just when they were bored. This summer, we also joined the Monterey Bay Aquarium yearly membership. Also a good deal because part of the membership fees are tax deductible, what more could we ask for? We have made it to Monterey Bay Aquarium twice already and that will be good until July 2009.

Short trips here and there are fun with these kids. You can see their bright smiles and their excitement! They love to go to these places where there's hands on activities. Monterey Bay Aquarium is usually an exciting trip for us. We can't leave Monterey without stopping by The Bubba Gumps for a late lunch.

The next one I have in mind is the Tech Museum in downtown San Jose. I will have to research a little bit more about it due to the ages of these little ones. They have not been to the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco or the Marine World in Vallejo. It gets really expensive to go to the parks nowadays that is why the idea of having a family membership will always be cost effective.

Magazine subscriptions? The latest I have was a FREE one from SELF Magazine. It was free offered by Amazon when I purchased something few months ago. It's free, sure why not? I used to have plenty, sometimes, there's no time to read. Do you ever notice that sometimes, the new issue is in the mail already and you have not opened the last month's issue?

Check out the websites before you plan on signing a membership or subscription. Is it all worth it? Are you going to visit the place at least twice in the same year if the benefits outweighs the costs? Will you really read all those magazines still unopened? It is your choice!

Nov 21 - To Put Up A Christmas Tree or Not

NOT. I guess that is the answer. I love those fresh cut trees Noble Fir as my favorite or I can settle for a Douglas Fir. Aahhh... the smell of the fresh tree, seems like we are going to miss this year. We usually get out and get our fresh tree at Home Depot. Few years back in Gilroy farms. The 7 ft. tree probably costs around $70 to $80 for a Noble Tree. Maybe $ 50 to $60 for a Douglas Fir. I'd like to experience getting a fresh, cut your own tree in the Santa Cruz Mountains, maybe in a few years when the two little kids will appreciate it.

I am trying to be practical in this economic crisis. I could use the money for the Christmas Adopt a Family , a Caring Kids Program at St. Christopher's Outreach. I know the spirit of Christmas ......

I have plans to go with the kids to the Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose. There will be plenty of decorated Christmas trees. The trees are usually donated and are decorated by the schools and non-profit organizations. It's fun to walk around at night with cold crisp air and listen to a choral performing Christmas carols. It's the 25th year of celebrating at Christmas in the Park http://www.christmasinthepark.com/

After strolling, maybe the kids can try the ice skating next to the park. Then go to Denny's and sip some hot cocoa or milk (drink all you can, what a deal), so far it sounds so good.

If we have to do all these it has to be after December 18th. The college girls will be back home. We also want to make sure these little ones get their afternoon nap to enjoy this fun filled night. Need to check the weather so there will be no sky waters (rain).

Sounds exciting. We will decorate the stair rails at home with the garland and blinking lights plus the music that goes with it then hang the stockings. Wreath at the door and that's all we will have.

Downtown San Jose, Christmas in the Park is where we will see all those beautiful freshly cut trees. Can't wait.

Nov 20 - Holiday Shopping

Christmas is just around the corner but it seems like I am not ready. I have not made any list of what to buy for the kids. It is hard nowadays with this bad economy and my budget is not affording any luxurious shopping spree. The timing is not right because the two college daughters will be buying books for winter quarter and second semester. On top of this is an "other expense", my contribution for my parents so-called "vacation". As much as I want to go on a much needed vacation myself, it seems like it will be postponed again. (This year was so tough for me with this life's ups and downs, I do need a VACATION)

So I just came back from the mall and was so happy to get the perfect parking spot for my beaten up Corolla. At the mall, I saw a lot of pre-Thanksgiving Sales already. So early and they are offering more or rather extra stuff if you buy something. I stopped by at Victoria Secret to get my FREE panties, yes... FREE. I take advantage of those FREE ones. I get these cards in the mail at least six times in a year, not bad at all. At Victoria Secret, the usual holiday promo buy 6 body lotions for $35 is a great deal and now they are offering 7 for $35 and they will give an extra 1 more... hhmmmm that's 8, good so far. I did not buy any. I went to Jamba Juice to get the gift cards for the swim teachers. If I buy $25 worth of Jamba Card, I get a free Jamba Juice, another good deal. So the FREE Jamba Juice will be used when we go back to the mall with the kids this week-end. My last stop was at the post office to get few stamps. Then I was off to get gas... oh wow, I have not seen how low the gas prices!

Now I am browsing Amazon. I have decided to get the little kids DVDs, I can get this cheaper even if I pay shipping fees, no tax and again much cheaper. I have a couple in mind for the little boy and possibly a Lego Dinosaur. The little girl wanted Pixos from Santa. The eldest ones get shopping money from me. They just get little things which I stuff in their stockings. I usually get them their eye liners, lip gloss, socks, etc. etc.

Presents for hubby? I don't know. He needs a new watch. I may get him one but I have to find a good deal on a dress watch. I usually get it at Macy's. I guess I will be one of those who'd wait for the last minute.

Presents for me? No. I sacrifice myself not getting anything during holidays and my birthday. I'd rather go on vacation. So I guess if I am able to save up a little it will happen but how?

This Christmas the little kids would get presents. The family is so big! I'd rather buy 200 plus pairs of flip flops for the poor children in the Philippines and see 200+ more kids with a smile on their face.

15 Nov - Payday

The most exciting day of the month - PAYDAY. The husband gets paid once a month, this actually is not a good thing in budgeting. It is hard to budget if you get paid once a month. Companies do this to cut costs on their end, having less workers to process payroll. Why should I complain, I do not even work. Budgeting is no biggie if there is enough money to budget, however, it gets challenging if there's less. Sometimes, unnecessary and unexpected expenses could messed up the budget. Saving a portion of what's earned whether it goes to your retirement or emergency funds is a good thing.

If we spend uncontrollably we face the greatest dilemma of budgeting. We do not budget pennies for pennies. We must have the discipline, otherwise, we lose in the end. Take advantage of sales, coupons, buy one get one free, or buying in bulk especially when we are buying items that are necessary. Sometimes we think we get a good deal but then we end up not fully utilizing what we saved to begin with.

Nowadays I do not buy a branded name laundry detergent and fabric softener. We shop at Costco and use their brand. I used to buy Tide but the cost is twice as much as the brand I get from Costco. I still smell and feel the freshness scent of my laundry using the non branded name with the price that is much less than the ones I used to get. Good savings on my budget.

Splurge. Depends on what suits my family for dinner is where we'd go, usually on weekends. I am a home mom and cook for my family. I do not cook everyday, ehem.... (need a break). The husband is flexible enough and make me decide on what to cook for the family. They eat what is being served. If I know I cooked too much, I freeze it in portions so my college kids can bring it to their dorm (they miss mommy's cooking).

Budgeting is fun to do. Don't crunch the numbers everyday. You just have to make sure you have x number for food, utilities, mortgage, property taxes, car insurance, garden maintenance, clothing (not so much here), tuition fees and many extra curricular fees and the list goes on and on.

13 Nov - Swimming Lessons

I have always wanted to learn how to swim when I was a kid. The family's so big so therefore, the chances were close to nil. Now that I have my own children, I made sure they're in those swim classes and learned the skills. As young as 4 years old, the eldest and second daughters were able to nail all those strokes and competitively swam for YMCA Swim Team until they were 4th graders. I enjoyed those moments when they checked their times on swimming and try to beat it each time they compete.

My objective was to let them learn the skills in swimming and any other sport. They get invited to swimming parties, ice skating, roller skating during their elementary days. Sure enough they enjoyed those parties with their friends. The eldest daughter continued Varsity swimming in high school. She's a certified swim instructor and a life guard at the YMCA.
Now, the two little ones started their swim classes in the summer and continued in the Fall. They will be enrolled until end of this month and will go back in the Spring next year. Still too early to determine if they will like the sport and do it competitively.

Yesterday it was their turn, tomorrow we will still see. As I always tell my kids, take the opportunity and grab it. It may be offered to you once, next time maybe it's gone.

P.S.
The eldest daughters were in the Shark Levels when they competed. The little girl is in Guppy (4 times) right now, close to Minnow. The little boy in Pike (5 times)

12 Nov - A Time Out From Our Daily Routine

It was nice to go out tonight and watched Notre Dame High School's volleyball game playing for CCS First Round Elimination. How I miss my daughters playing this sport. I was reminiscing last year's first round of CCS Championships and my daughter was asked to play for this coach's boy's volleyball team. It was a great honor people congratulating her as she played her best defensively. It made me proud of her even more when parents congratulated me. She is not even 5 feet tall, however, she can go to that floor and dive for that ball. As a Defensive Specialist (Libero), she was ranked in the top 100 in the State of California, ranked 11 in the CCS (Central Coast Section), and ranked no. 1 in West Bay (her high school league).

Last week, I was cleaning and saw all her trophies from playing volleyball and basketball (yes, basketball Jr. Varsity Freshman & Sophomore years). I realized this girl had all these talents and she gave all her heart out in playing these sports. Now that she is in college, she is on the sidelines watching and cheering for her school. How I wish I know what it feels to be a spectator when you were once a star player. Great Job, Super K. ND missed you so much
